Steps to drape a saree

Draping a saree can seem daunting at first, but with a bit of practice, it can become quite easy. Here are the basic steps to drape a saree:

  1. Choosing the saree: Pick a saree that you like and that suits the occasion. Make sure it is long enough to wrap around your body at least once and has enough fabric to make pleats.

  2. Preparing for draping: Wear a fitted blouse and a petticoat that matches the color of your saree. Tie the petticoat tightly around your waist, and make sure it falls to your ankles.

  3. Tucking the saree: Take one end of the saree and tuck it into the petticoat at the center of your waist. Make sure the saree is tucked in tightly and evenly around your waist.

  4. Making pleats: Take the remaining fabric of the saree and make pleats of approximately 5-6 inches. Hold the pleats together and tuck them into the petticoat, slightly to the left of the center.

  5. Drapping the pallu: Take the pallu (the loose end of the saree) and drape it over your left shoulder. You can pin it in place to keep it secure.

  6. Arranging the pleats: Arrange the pleats neatly and evenly, and make sure they are facing the same direction. Tuck them into the petticoat, slightly to the left of the center.

  7. Final touches: Adjust the saree as needed to ensure it is comfortable and looks good. You can add accessories like bangles, earrings, and a necklace to complete the look.

There are different draping styles for sarees, such as the Nivi drape and the Bengali drape, among others. You can choose the one that you prefer and practice it until you get comfortable with it.

Steps to drape a saree in Bengali style

The Bengali style of draping a saree is unique and elegant, and involves draping the pallu in a different way than the traditional style. Here are the basic steps to drape a saree in Bengali style:

  1. Preparing for draping: Wear a fitted blouse and a petticoat that matches the color of your saree. Tie the petticoat tightly around your waist, and make sure it falls to your ankles.

  2. Tucking the saree: Take one end of the saree and tuck it into the petticoat at the center of your waist. Make sure the saree is tucked in tightly and evenly around your waist.

  3. Making pleats: Take the remaining fabric of the saree and make pleats of approximately 5-6 inches. Hold the pleats together and tuck them into the petticoat, slightly to the left of the center.

  4. Drapping the pallu: Take the pallu (the loose end of the saree) and drape it over your left shoulder, bringing it around your back to your right side. Pin the top corner of the pallu to your blouse, just below your right shoulder.

  5. Making pleats with the pallu: Take the remaining fabric of the pallu and make pleats of approximately 5-6 inches. Hold the pleats together and tuck them into the petticoat, slightly to the left of the center.

  6. Final touches: Adjust the saree as needed to ensure it is comfortable and looks good. You can add accessories like bangles, earrings, and a necklace to complete the look.

This is a basic Bengali style of draping a saree, and there are variations to it, such as the "Shadaa Sheede" drape. You can experiment with different styles and see which one suits you the best.
